Winton, North Carolina

Hertford County was formed in 1759 from parts of Bertie County, Chowan County, and Northampton County. It was given its name for Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Earl of Hertford and later the 1st Marquess of Hertford. Hertford County's borders shrank in 1779 when a piece of it was combined with land from Chowan and Perquiman counties to form Gates County. Upon its founding, the community of Winton was named in honor of Benjamin Winton, a prominent local landowner.

Average high temperatures in Winton reach 88 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average low temperatures drop to 27 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 4.1 inches. Annual snowfall averages 8.4 inches.

There are eight public schools within Hertford County that offer education to area students, including one high school that is considered an "Early College" school situated on Roanoke Chowan Community College campus in Ahoskie, just 8 miles away from Winton.

Institutions of higher education located within 60 miles of town include Tidewater Community College, Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University, Hampton University, Thomas Nelson Community College, Old Dominion University and Pitt Community College.

Roanoke Chowan Hospital serves local health care needs from 6 miles outside of town.

Winton's location on the banks of the Chowan River make it an ideal place from which to launch a boat or cast your line. The river is home to an ample population of largemouth bass, black crappie and white perch.

Float south along the Chowan River to reach Holladay Island. It has remained virtually unchanged since it was acquired by Thomas Holladay in 1730. Part of the Albemarle Regional Canoe/Kayak Paddling Trail, it is now home to five camping platforms for wildlife & outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.

Tuscarosa Greens Golf & Country Club is located near the center of Winton, and features 18 holes with rolling terrain, some water hazards, numerous trees, a putting green, chipping area, snack bar and pro shop.
