Winton, North Carolina
Hertford County was
formed in 1759 from parts of Bertie County,
Chowan County, and Northampton County. It was
given its name for Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st
Earl of Hertford and later the 1st Marquess of
Hertford. Hertford County's borders shrank in
1779 when a piece of it was combined with land
from Chowan and Perquiman counties to form Gates
County. Upon its founding, the community of
Winton was named in honor of Benjamin Winton, a
prominent local landowner. |
